The article presents several adaptive fuzzy hedge logics . These logics are designed to perform a specific kind of hedge detection. Given a premise set Γ that represents a series of communicated statements, the logics can check whether some predicate occurring in Γ may be interpreted as being (implicitly) hedged by technically , strictly speaking or loosely speaking , or simply non-hedged. The logics take into account both the logical constraints of the premise set as well as conceptual information concerning (...) the meaning of potentially hedged predicates (stored in the memory of the interpreter in question). The proof theory of the logics is non-monotonic in order to enable the logics to deal with possible non-monotonic interpretation dynamics (this is illustrated by means of several concrete proofs). All the adaptive fuzzy hedge logics are also sound and strongly complete with respect to their [0,1]-semantics. (shrink)

The criteria focus on the way in which the logic deals with a special ⊡-operator. Depending on the kind of logic for vagueness that is used as a basis for the adaptive vague logic, this operator can be interpreted as completely true, definitely true, clearly true , etc. It is proven that a wide range of famous logics for vagueness satisfies these criteria when extended with a specific ⊡-operator, e.g. fuzzy basic logic and its well known extensions, cf. [7], super- and subvaluationist logics, cf. [6], [9], and clarity logic, cf. [13]. Also a fuzzy logic is presented that can be used for an adaptive vague logic that can deal with higher-order vagueness. Developmental research suggests that young children tend to value dominant individuals over subordinates. This research, however, has nearly exclusively been carried out in Western cultures, and cross-cultural research among adults has revealed cultural differences in the valuing of dominance. In particular, it seems that Japanese culture, relative to many Western cultures, values dominance less. We conducted two experiments to test whether this difference would be observed in preschoolers. In Experiment 1, preschoolers in France and in Japan were asked to identify (...) with either a dominant or a subordinate. French preschoolers identified with the dominant, but Japanese preschoolers were at chance. Experiment 2 revealed that Japanese preschoolers were more likely to believe a subordinate than a dominant individual, both compared to chance and compared to previous findings among French preschoolers. The convergent results from both experiments thus reveal an early emerging cross-cultural difference in the valuing of dominance. (shrink)

The social construction of reality is influenced extensively by the mass media. Commercialised images of masculinity, including discourses to interpret it, are continuously reflected and/or created by sources of mass media, in a myriad of ways. These images are subjectively loaded, but still effectively communicate to us, and even entice and persuade us. It furthermore wields extensive power over men - especially over their self-images, passions, and egos. In this article, dominating images and discourses concerning manhood and male identity - (...) particularly those displayed in men's health magazines - were critically examined. This was done through a thematic analysis of 123 issues of MHM cover pages. The investigation showed that MHM is infused with traditional masculine ideology. Moreover, MHM fails to confront discourses that endorse hegemonic masculinity, for the sake of holistic health. It was suggested that a sober, precautionary, health strategy should challenge men to critically engage with MHM's reigning creed: 'big, hard and up'. This creed incites a utilitarian view of sexuality within a culture of performance-driven masculinity, which subsequently fuels anxieties that can lead to unhealthy issues, such as body image dissatisfaction. From a pastoral care perspective, it was asserted that Christian men need to search for alternative ways to instigate their capacity to experience and facilitate authentic intimacy, in order to work toward the social construction of more balanced and healthy discourses on male identity. Human Biological Materials (HBMs) are an invaluable resource in biomedical research.ObjectiveTo determine if researchers and a Research Ethics Committee (REC) at a South African institution addressed ethical issues pertaining to HBMs in collaborative research with developed countries.Study DesignEthically approved retrospective cross‐sectional descriptive audit.ResultsOf the 1305 protocols audited, 151 (11.57%) fulfilled the study's inclusion criteria. Compared to other developed countries, a majority of sponsors (90) were from the USA (p = 0.0001). The principle investigators (PIs) in all 151 protocols informed the (...) REC of their intent to store HBMs. Only 132 protocols informed research participants (P < 0.0001). In 148 protocols informed consent (IC) was obtained from research participants, 116 protocols (76.8%) solicited broad consent compared to specific consent (32; 21.2%) [p < 0.0001]. In 105 cases a code was used to maintain confidentiality. HBMs were anonymised in 14 protocols [p < 0.0001]. More protocols informed the REC (90) than the research participants (67) that HBMs would be exported (p = 0.011). Export permits (EPs) and Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) were not available in 109 and 143 protocols, respectively.ConclusionsResearchers and the REC did not adequately address the inter‐related ethical and regulatory issues pertaining to HBMs. There was a lack of congruence between the ethical guidelines of developed countries and their actions which are central to the access to HBMs in collaborative research. HBMs may be leaving South Africa without EPs and MTAs during the process of international collaborative research. (shrink)

Das Buch des Flamen Van Ussel „Intimiteit” bildet seinen Ausgangspunkt. Sorgfältig abwägende kritische Betrachtungen bieten dem Verfasser Gelegenheit, Probleme zu behandeln, die indirekt mit der Initimität zusammenhängen und dabei der Sichtweise einiger bedeutender Philosophen und Humanwissenschaftler Rechnung zu tragen : Probleme, die u. a. die menschliche Leiblichkeit, das Wohnen und (...) die Institutionalisierung menschlicher Beziehungen betreffen. Auch die Frage, ob Scham eine Art Schuldgefühl ist, das mittels Psychotherapie eliminiert werden soll, oder ein natürlicher Schutz der Intimität, wird erörtert. - Mit der letzten Meditation begibt sich der Verfasser auf das Gebiet der Ethik. Van Ussel ist ja auf der Suche nach „alternative Formen des Zusammenleben”, die an die Stelle der „bürgerlichen Familie” treten sollen. Die philosophische Frage wird diskutiert, was in diesem Zusammenhang die Begriffe „ alternativ” und „bürgerlich” eigentlich bedeuten. Ist eine rein ethische Kritik der „bürgerlichen Einstellung” möglich ? Ist eine Ethik denkbar, die die bürgerliche Moral transzendiert, ohne sie zu verwerfen ? (shrink)

Seit dem Auftreten von Emmanuel Levinas ist die Frage hinsichtlich einer Deformalisierung der Ethik wieder aktuell geworden. Es liegt vor der Hand, Levinas' Fundamentalethik mit der Kants zu vergleichen. — Worin besteht der vielbesprochene „Formalismus” der Kantschen Moral? Keinesfalls kann von einer gänzlichen Verkennung der inhaltlichen Bestimmungsgründe des Willens die Rede sein. Eher könnte man darauf hinweisen, dasz Kant die Verwurzelung gewisser kategorischer Imperative in typischen sozial-historischen gesellschaftlichen Strukturen zu wenig Gewicht beigemessen hat. Auch die Problematik der asymmetrischen Beziehungen, der (...) Beziehungen, die für „ Gemeinschaft” (im Gegensatz zu „Gesellschaft”) typisch sind, ist ihm entgangen. — Der Verfasser erörtert ferner die Frage, ob Kant gut daran getan hat, seine Tugend-und Pflichtenlehre in einem gewissen Parallelismus mit seiner Rechtslehre zu entwickeln. Er vergleicht den Begriff der „Pflicht” mit dem des „Opfers”, wobei er unter letzterem die spontane Opferwilligkeit versteht, die sich nicht an die Grenzen der formalen Schuldigkeit hält. Vielleicht besteht das primäre ethische Phänomen darin, dasz ich ursprünglich bereit bin, Verantwortung für meinen Nächsten zu tragen. Der Nächste ist dabei jeweils ein Einziger, und zwar ein Einziger in Bezug auf mich. Ueberdies ist jedes Opfer bereits infolge der Temporalität meines Daseins einmalig und nicht wiederholbar. Die unmittelbare Bereitschaft, für den Nächsten in die Bresche zu springen, ist Levinas zufolge die vorreflexive Grundlage, auf der jedes Moralsystem beruht. Levinas' Ethik underscheidet sich insoferne von der Kants, als der erstere in der Unizität des Nächsten und der einzigartigen Verantwortung für ihn ein Absolutum sieht, letzterer dagegen in der Universalität und Notwendigkeit ethischer Pflichterfüllung. Ferner beruft sich der französische Denker in erster Instanz auf die Unmittelbarkeit der sittlichen Erfahrung, während Kant mit moralischen Reflexionsbegriffen arbeitet. — Der Verfasser führt zuletzt den Nachweis, dasz Kant dem Gesichtspunkt der Deformalisierung mitunter Rechnung trägt, freilich um den Preis gewisser Inkonsequenzen. Die im ersten Band der „Werke” Bubers unter dem Titel „Schriften zur Philosophie” herausgegebenen Publikationen behandeln vielfach Probleme der Theologie, der Mystik, der Erziehungswissenschaften, Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Soziologie und Politik. Der Verfasser fragt sich, ob dieser heterogenen Vielfalt eine gedankliche Einheit innewohnt. Wenn man grundsätzlich zwischen Religionsphilosophie und Theologie unterscheidet, wenn man ferner annimmt, dasz die Philosophie sich auf ein Feld nichtphilosophischer Erfahrungen besinnen kann, ohne darum ihren philosophischen Charakter einzubüszen, dann kann diese Frage bejaht werden. Allerdings trägt Bubers philosophische Besinnung (...) dem empirischen Charakter von Soziologie, Psychologie, Erziehungswissenschaft in keiner Weise Rechnung. - Der Verfasser trachtet an der Hand der wichtigsten „Schriften” nachzuweisen, dasz ihre Einheit aus existentiellen Eindrücken des jungen Buber erwächst : in negativer Hinsicht aus seiner Ablehnung der liberalen Gesellschaftsordnung, in positiver aus seiner begeisterten Hinwendung zu einer - im weitesten Sinne - „religiös” inspirierten Gemeinschaft. On a widely held view in aesthetics, appreciation requires disinterested attention. George Dickie famously criticized a version of this view championed by the aesthetic attitude theorists. I revisit his criticisms and extract an overlooked challenge for accounts that seek to characterize appreciative engagement in terms of distinctive motivation: at minimum, the motivational profile such accounts propose must make a difference to how appreciative episodes unfold over time. I then develop a proposal to meet this challenge by drawing an analogy between (...) how attention is guided in appreciation and how practical action is guided in ‘striving play’—a mode of game play recently foregrounded in the philosophy of games. On the resulting account, appreciation involves an ‘inverted’ motivational structure: the appreciating agent's attention is guided by cognitive goals taken up instrumentally, for the sake of the cognitive activity that results from attending under the guidance of those goals. Our contribution concerns the continuous training of teachers that will be forming future teachers during their traineeship. It aims to describe how the professional development of the trainees’ coaches, both the training supervisors as well as the supervisors form the trainees’ schools, was used during a course proposed by a university and during meetings where practices were shared by the participants. In this manner, we identified the ideal moments for development of the trainees, as well as the most important levers (...) for the transformation of the coaches. We paid particular attention to the reflexive contract co-defined by the group, as well as to the principle of social moderation at the heart of the collaborative group’s dynamic. (shrink)

Exploration of Alfred North Whitehead's influence on Maurice Merleau-Ponty's ontology of nature.

Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary effort to understand the structures and functions of the brain and brain-mind relations. This effort results in an increasing amount of data, generated by sophisticated technologies. However, these data enhance our descriptive knowledge, rather than improve our understanding of brain functions. This is caused by methodological gaps both within and between subdisciplines constituting neuroscience, and the atomistic approach that limits the study of macro- and mesoscopic issues. Whole-brain measurement technologies do not resolve these issues, but rather (...) aggravate them by the complexity problem. The present article is devoted to methodological and epistemic problems that obstruct the development of human neuroscience. We neither discuss ontological questions nor review data, except when it is necessary to demonstrate a methodological issue. As regards intradisciplinary methodological problems, we concentrate on those within neurobiology and psychology. As regards interdisciplinary problems, we suggest that core disciplines of neuroscience can be integrated using systemic concepts that also entail human-environment relations. We emphasize the necessity of a meta-discussion that should entail a closer cooperation with philosophy as a discipline of systematic reflection. The atomistic reduction should be complemented by the explicit consideration of the embodiedness of the brain and the embeddedness of humans. The discussion is aimed at the development of an explicit methodology of integrative human neuroscience, which will not only link different fields and levels, but also help in understanding clinical phenomena. Most research in environmental psychology is conducted in individualistic countries and focuses on factors pertaining to individuals. It is yet unclear whether these findings also apply to more collectivistic countries, in which group factors might play a prominent role. In the current paper, we test the individual-focused value–identity–behaviour pathway, in which personal biospheric values relate to pro-environmental actions via environmental self-identity, in an individualistic and a collectivistic country. Furthermore, we test in both countries whether a new group-focused pathway also exists, (...) in which group values relate to pro-environmental behaviour via environmental group identity, particularly in collectivistic countries. Questionnaire studies were conducted among Dutch and Chinese students. Our results indicated that personal biospheric values, mostly via environmental self-identity, predict pro-environmental behaviour in both countries. We also found initial support for our newly proposed value–identity–behaviour pathway at the group level, particularly in China. Yet, in both countries, the association between group-level variables and pro-environmental behaviour was weaker than for personal-level variables, and partly overlapped with personal-level variables. Our findings show the relevance of personal- and group-level factors in understanding pro-environmental behaviour in both individualistic and collectivistic countries, which has strong theoretical and practical implications, particularly for developing international strategies to promote pro-environmental actions across the world. We define balance games, which describe the formation of friendships and enmity in social networks. We show that if the agents give high priority to future profits over short term gains, all Pareto optimal strategies will eventually result in a balanced network. If, on the other hand, agents prioritize short term gains over the long term, every Nash equilibrium eventually results in a network that is stable but that might not be balanced.

This paper argues, first, that biological evolution can be both random and divinely guided at the same time. Next it discusses the idea that the claim that evolution is unguided is not part of the science of evolution, and defends it against a number of objections.

Many political theorists, philosophers, social scientists, and other academics engage in political activism. And many think this is how things ought to be. In this essay, I challenge the ideal of the politically engaged academic. I argue that, quite to the contrary, political theorists, philosophers, and other political thinkers have a prima facie duty to refrain from political activism. This argument is based on a commonsense moral principle, a claim about the point of political thought, and findings in cognitive psychology.

Cette étude fournit une analyse comparative des politiques liées à la position des personnes handicapées sur le marché du travail en Finlande et en Italie, deux pays où l’écart d’emploi entre les personnes handicapées et non handicapées est relativement faible. Cette étude examine les politiques visant à améliorer la position des personnes handicapées sur le marché du travail et se base sur la littérature existante et des entretiens avec des experts. L’analyse comparative montre que ces deux pays emploient des approches (...) politiques différentes. En Finlande, les compensations sont relativement élevées et les politiques mettent l’accent sur la prévention. Cependant, les mesures d’activation pour les bénéficiaires de compensations d’invalidité font défaut. En Italie, les politiques se concentrent sur l’activation. La loi italienne sur les quotas oblige les entreprises à embaucher des personnes handicapées. En outre, les coopératives sociales offrent des emplois aux personnes handicapées. Les résultats suggèrent que les efforts visant à garantir des mesures de compensation et d’activation adéquates, combinés à des processus créés pour construire une société inclusive, peuvent contribuer à améliorer la situation du marché du travail pour les personnes handicapées. Legal and moral reasoning share much methodology, and they address similar problems. This volume charts two shared problems: the relation between theory, principles and particular judgments; and the role of facts and factual assertions in normative settings. The relation between 'theory' and 'practice' and between 'principle' and 'particular judgment' has become the subject of much debate in moral philosophy. In the ongoing debate, some moral philosophers refer to legal philosophy for a support of their views on the primacy of 'practice' (...) over 'theory'. According to them, legal philosophy should have a more balanced view in that relation. In the contributions to Part One this claim is critically analysed. The role of the facts is underestimated in discussions on legal reasoning and legal theory, as well as moral reasoning and ethical theory. Factual statements enter into moral and legal discussions not only because they link the conclusion with a rule. They also play a role as background assumptions in supporting a theory. Its focus on the role of facts in normative reasoning makes this book of special interest to scholars of legal and moral argumentation. (shrink)

In the present work we illustrate how two sorts of defeasible reasoning that are fundamental in the normative domain, that is, reasoning about exceptions and reasoning about violations, can be simulated via monotonic propositional theories based on a bimodal language with primitive operators representing knowledge and obligation. The proposed theoretical framework paves the way to using native theorem provers for multimodal logic, such as MleanCoP, in order to automate normative reasoning.

Four experiments examined the strategies that individuals develop in sentential reasoning. They led to the discovery of five different strategies. According to the theory proposed in the paper, each of the strategies depends on component tactics, which all normal adults possess, and which are based on mental models. Reasoners vary their use of tactics in ways that have no deterministic account. This variation leads different individuals to assemble different strategies, which include the construction of incremental diagrams corresponding to mental models, (...) and the pursuit of the consequences of a single model step by step. Moreover, the difficulty of a problem (i.e., the number of mental models required by the premises) predisposes reasoners towards certain strategies. Likewise, the sentential connectives in the premises also bias reasoners towards certain strategies, e.g., conditional premises tend to elicit reasoning step by step whereas disjunctive premises tend to elicit incremental diagrams. In this position paper, we describe a number of methodological and philosophical challenges that arose within our interdisciplinary Digital Humanities project CatVis, which is a collaboration between applied geometric algorithms and visualization researchers, data scientists working at OCLC, and philosophers who have a strong interest in the methodological foundations of visualization research. The challenges we describe concern aspects of one single epistemic need: that of methodologically securing (an increase in) trust in visualizations. We discuss the lack of ground truths in (...) the (digital) humanities and argue that trust in visualizations requires that we evaluate visualizations on the basis of ground truths that humanities scholars themselves create. We further argue that trust in visualizations requires that a visualization provides provable guarantees on the faithfulness of the visual representation and that we must clearly communicate to the users which part of the visualization can be trusted and how much. Finally, we discuss transparency and accessibility in visualization research and provide measures for securing transparency and accessibility. (shrink)
